Death is our deepest and most powerful fear.
Last night I watched someone die
Witnessing the slow withdrawal from life
The closing of the senses
The soundless movements of the lips
The final dimming of the light in the eyes.
I did what I could to make them comfortable
There was nothing else to do
But I couldn’t take away the fear
The clinging to life
At the edge of the unknown.
Afterwards I couldn’t sleep
Couldn’t find the peace
That I hoped that they now had
Their fear was now in me
I felt my own death approaching.
Too often we try to comfort ourselves
By denying the reality of the dying
Failing to see the potential of death
We fight for our last breath
In fear and despair.
Letting go of our clinging to life
We realize that death has meaning
Relaxing in the experience
Releasing our last breaths
Free of suffering at last.
Life is just a fabrication
And death a concept.
They have no power.
We have choice.
Our Deepest Fear
By Marianne Williamson
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.
We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small
Does not serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine,
As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us;
It’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we’re liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.
