This page contains basic mindfulness sitting meditation practices recorded over several years. The more recent recordings will have a date and a place attached to them so participants in mindfulness sessions run by the Highland Mindfulness Group can more easily find familiar practices.
All the meditations on this page are available to listen to here and some of the older ones may be downloaded to your computer. Please let us know if you experience any difficulties and we will do what we can to sort things out.

1. This is a sitting, settling and grounding practice lasting 25minutes recorded in the Chapel of the RNI on Thursday the 18th January 2018.

2.This is a sitting meditation in which participants are invited to notice their thoughts and in particular to be aware of the gap between thoughts. It’s 20minutes long and was recorded in the Chapel of the RNI on Thursday the 18th January 2018.

6. Sitting, grounding and resting – and being aware of where in the body the mind comes to rest. A 25minute meditation practice the last 10 minutes of which are in complete silence. This was recorded in the Chapel of the RNI on Thursday the 1st February 2018.
7. “Being in the moment” meditation – a 30 minute meditation practice recorded at the “Being positive” study day on Friday the 16th February 2018.
8. “Observing the tendency of the mind to engage with thought” meditation practice – a 25minute meditation intended to induce a state of deep resting in the body and the mind during which the arising and passing away of thought can be experienced. Recorded in the Chapel of the RNI on Thursday the 22nd February 2018.
9. “Being with the flow” sitting practice. A 25minute meditation that followed a relaxing body scan and is intended to allow the mind to rest with the body so that thoughts can flow through awareness with the minimum of resistance. Recorded in the Chapel of the RNI on Thursday the 8th March 2018.
10. “Judging thoughts sitting practice” – a 35minute practice recorded at the “Judgement Day” study day on the 16th March 2018.
11. Techniques for releasing thoughts during meditation practice – a 20minute practice recorded at the “Judgement Day” study day on the 16th March 2018.
12. “Being the observer” – a 25minute basic sitting practice designed to help participants to rest in awareness and simply observe the activity of their minds. Recorded in the Chapel of the RNI on Thursday the 10th May 2018.
13. “Being with” sitting practice – a relatively short 15minute practice in which participants are encouraged to come to rest in awareness of their 5 senses, their breath and their minds. Recorded in the Chapel of the RNI on Thursday the 23rd August 2018.

14. “Non-engagement sitting practice” – a 20minute practice designed to help participants observe and let go of the tendency of the mind to engage with thoughts. Recorded in the RNI Chapel on Thursday the 22nd November 2018.
15. “Starting the day mindfully” – a 15minute commentary/practice designed to help us begin the day in awareness from the moment that we wake to getting out of bed and starting the day. There aren’t any bells at the beginning or the end of this commentary because it is not intended to be a meditation in itself but simply guidance on how to bring mindfulness into the process of waking and getting up. Recorded at the “Coping with Christmas” study day on the 20th December 2019.
16. “Feeling in to the Mind” practice – a 20minute practice in which participants are invited to feel into the mind and it’s wants and desires – for instance, to feel how the mind is drawn towards thinking, the desire to engage with thought, the desire for things to be different and the need for permanence and security. Recorded during an online meditation session on Tuesday the 10th March 2020.
17. “Coming to rest” practice – a 25minute settling, grounding and resting practice to develop deep relaxation and a sense of stillness. Recorded online on Wednesday the 15th April 2020.
